About the Free Speech Union South Africa
The Free Speech Union of South Africa (FSU SA) is dedicated to defending and promoting the right to freedom of expression.
Freedom of speech is a foundational liberty. It enables individuals to exchange ideas, challenge authority, expose wrongdoing, and participate meaningfully in public life. Without it, democratic accountability weakens, intellectual progress is constrained, and individual freedom is diminished.
Although freedom of expression is protected by the South African Constitution, it is increasingly subject to social, institutional, and professional pressures. Individuals may face reputational harm, disciplinary action, or exclusion for expressing lawful views that diverge from prevailing opinion.
FSU SA exists to uphold the principle that freedom of expression belongs to everyone, including those whose views may be unpopular, controversial, or critical.
What we do
FSU SA works to defend and advance free expression through a combination of advocacy, public engagement, and support.
Our work includes:
Promoting the importance of free speech as a cornerstone of a free society
Challenging attempts to restrict or undermine lawful expression
Contributing to public debate through media engagement, articles, and commentary
Providing talks, workshops, and educational initiatives on free expression
Supporting individuals whose right to speak has been challenged
Connecting individuals with appropriate legal or specialist assistance where necessary
We aim to strengthen a culture of open debate, intellectual honesty, and tolerance for differing views.
Why it matters
A society that protects freedom of expression allows ideas to be tested, refined, and challenged. It creates space for disagreement, innovation, and progress.
When speech is restricted, debate narrows and power becomes less accountable. Over time, this weakens the institutions that sustain a free and democratic society.
Defending freedom of expression is preserving the conditions necessary for a healthy public life.
Our approach
The Free Speech Union SA focuses on practical, principled action.
We engage in public advocacy, produce commentary on issues affecting free expression, and support individuals facing unjust restrictions on their speech. Where appropriate, we consider legal avenues, guided by our Advisory Board and subject to available resources and the merits of each case.
At the same time, we recognise that the right to free expression carries responsibilities. The law provides recourse in cases such as defamation, and these protections remain important.
FSU SA does not support the criminalisation of lawful speech simply because it is offensive or controversial. Open debate, rather than suppression, is the appropriate response to disagreement.
Looking ahead
FSU SA continues to expand its work in response to evolving challenges to free expression.
Future initiatives include strengthening research on threats to free speech, expanding educational programmes, supporting debate and public speaking initiatives, and, where appropriate, pursuing strategic litigation.
We aim to contribute to a South Africa in which ideas can be openly expressed, debated, and challenged.
