Muzzling free speech in Britain

The Online Safey Act in the UK came into force in late July 2025. Intended to protect children from pornography, self-harm and suicide, the Act has resulted in the shutting down of other subjects.

John Power in The Spectator of 2 August 2025 wrote an article entitled Ctrl U: the Online Safety Act is shutting down the internet. He said:

“Social media posts showing rioters fighting with police have been suppressed; those referring to sexual attacks have been automatically flagged as pornographic. Footage from a protest outside the Britannia Hotel in Leeds, which showed police officers restraining and arresting a protestor, now can’t be easily accessed in Britain.”

Power describes the Act as “…the most sweeping attempt by any liberal democracy to bring the online world under the control of the state.”

The competition in the Anglophone world is stiff: New Zealand and Australia have similar legislation and the FSUs of both countries has challenged aspects of them.
